Best Blackberry Tips: How to Get Data Signal Back

Guy over at bbgeeks.com has written an interesting tip of getting the data signal on your Blackberry. As he had experienced this thing several times so he tough you probably have the same difficulties. This problem usually will happen when you don’t use your device for a while or you are in non-reception zone (ex subway). You may open a site and expect the Request bar to fill up. In this case, many will think to pull the battery that actually can be pain, as some devices need long time to boot up.

Of course, in many cases you Blackberry needs a full battery pull. Here you can do something. Enter Manage Connections then turn the mobile network connection off. Wait for a minute till you view EVDO or 3G icon go away and signal meter becomes blank. Finally you can turn the connection back. You’ll see your signal data now without reboot.

You’ll need battery pull if there is still no data signal after this trick. If this last solution doesn’t work so a defect may be exist on your Blackberry. The other possibility is you are looking at an outage of some sort.

Best Blackberry Freeware (Free Apps)

Yup. You heard me right, i am currently planning on making a list of best Blackberry Apps (Freeware). I probably will make a new category for it, which might be called as best blackberry app. Perhaps there will be 20 best blackberry freeware I will posted there, and you might be familiar with some of them. Most freeware should be able to work on all blackberry series, including Blackberry Bold 9700, Tour, Storm, Bold 9000, Curve, and Pearl.

I’m planning to discuss about each freeware on a single post, so there will be several series. I look forward to post the list of best blackberry freeware for you, my beloved readers, I hope I can post 1-2 best blackberry Apps (freeware) each week and I will update this post each time I posted a page about it.

Quick navigation can be got thru shortcut keys in almost all native apps. There are Blackberry tips have been available such as home screen shortcuts, browser shortcuts, message screen shortcuts and so on.

But are you notice that it can be a lil bit frustrating when you try a new app without shortcuts? In the beginning you may think it seems like to have shortcut but turns out to be not (like some Twitter applications).

The other thing, you may have noticed that in your message screen tips, you cant cover shortcuts within the message.

So here we’ll go, adding to the message screen shortcuts.

When you are Inside a message

When you’re inside a BlackBerry email, you can use the following shortcut keys:

R: Reply

L: Reply All

F: Forward message

I: File a message in a folder

Q: When your cursor is over a sender or recipient, this shows their email address

T: Top of message

B: Bottom of message

S: Search for text within a message

G: Move the cursor to the last position in a received message

When you are On the message list

In addition to T going to the top and B going to the bottom…

Alt + U: Mark a message read or unread

C: Compose message

Alt + I: View received messages / incoming calls

Alt + O: View sent messages / outgoing calls

Alt + S: View SMS logs

Alt + P: View call logs

Alt + V: View voicemail

U: Scroll to the next unread message

J: Move to the next related message (in a Re: thread)

K: Move to the previous related message

N: Next date

P: Previous date

You can press the escape key once you want to exit the specialty screen such as received calls, SMS etc. Scrolling down a page can be done by hitting space and back up a page by hitting Alt + Space.

[Blackberry Tips and Tricks] How to set automatic dim backlight on or of

Are you a Blackberry user? If so, you might find a cool feature of your device namely Automatically Dim Backlight. This option is located in Options > Screen/Keyboard. A pool about this option has been made by crackberry.com. The pool gives question whether the users set their “Automatically Dim Backlight” option to OFF or ON. The answer are vary but most of them seem to turn on the option.

The blog post author, Adam Zeis never uses this option personally. But he finds the option usefull especially when the user is located in a dark room. Take for instance, when he was on a concert, he set it to automatically dim and the result was cool. Yes, the option may give users a little trouble depended on the available lighting. But in other side, this nice feature can help users save their battery life.

If you want to see more reason for turning it on or off just visit the pool. Based on the available comments, it seems a lot of people think that the light provided by Blackberry with the Automatically Dim Backlight option is turned ON is enough. The lighting feels comfortable to eyes and the most important thing is it can save battery life for sure.

Great news, Americans! Are you familiar with ShopBlackberry?It is the official website where RIM sells accessories for BlackBerry smartphones. Anyway, apparently RIM has just added the Shopblackberry store free apps to the Blackberry App World.

Finding and shopping for RIM Blackberry accessories and items has become easier. Some of the free app’s features include automatic device detection and catalogue updates. Moreover, secure credit card purchasing and address book integration is also the part of this Blackberry freeware. Currently Visa and Mastercard are accepted, but it would be nice if in the future we can see Paypal payment as an option….

WeatherEye has been one of the popular weather app for Blackberry… Besides of the nice features, the WeatherEye app is a freeware. But I personally think that the freeware works great and you should look no further for a great service like this.

Anyway, the weathereye free app apparently has reached version 2.0.14; and it is now available for download. Some of the improvements found in the new WeatherEye freeware version 2 are:

Redesigned GUI
Multiple Locations
Hourly forecasts
POP in long term forecast
Maps (not sure what for, though)

You can download the WeatherEye 2 via OTA directly from the Blackberry App World. Enjoy, everyone….

Ok, We’ve talked about how to install JAD, JAR, COD and ALX files on your Blackberry, How to set email on your Blackberry, and other Blackberry How-To tutorial. Now it is time for us to move on to the next Blackberry Tips and Tricks. This time we will discuss how to manage folders in your Blackberry.

I know that some of you think that you don’t need to manage your folders/apps on your Blackberry. However, the story can be different if you have tons of applications on your beloved phone. When this happens, it can be a bit hard to find your desired apps… By using folders to manage your apps, you can save more time and find the apps easier next time.

Managing folders is pretty simple, actually. For the record, almost all new BlackBerry devices come with a few built-in folders which includes Applications, Games, Setup, Instant Messaging, and Downloads. Here is some tips on how to manage folders in Blackberry:

How to Create a New Folder

Click the Menu button
Scroll down and choose the Add Folder option
Name the folder in the dialog and voila, you’re done.
Your new folder is now on your desktop

How to Move Icon from the Applications Menu to a folder

Scroll over the icon
Press The Menu button
Select Move to Folder options. A list of your current folder will then appear.
Select the one you want
Voila, you’re done!

If you want to remove an icon from a folder and send it back to the homescreen, here’s how to do it:

Click the folder,
Scroll over the icon
Press The Menu button
Select Move to Folder options. and select Home.

Today I’m gonna give you a tips on how to install applications in your Blackberry. Later we will talk about how to install JAD, JAD, COD or ALX files on your Blackberry. All of you who already owned Blackberry for a while might already know this, but I suppose this post might be useful for new Blackberry users out there. With the growing numbers of applications out there (outside of RIM’s official Blackberry applications), I think that the installing Blackberry apps tutorial is just something that you need

Anyway, first we will reveal what exactly are those .JAD, .JAR, .COD, and .ALX file types before we go to the installing part.

.JAD files: An application descriptor that stores information about the application itself and the location of .COD files
.JAR files: a JAR file (or Java ARchive) is used for aggregating many files into one. It is generally used to distribute Java classes and associated metadata.
.COD files: A COD file is a proprietary file format developed by RIM that contains compiled and packaged application code.
.ALX files: Similar to the .JAD file, in that it holds information about where the installation files for the application are located

Now basically there are two ways to install JAD / JAR / COD / ALX files, directly via your Blackberry and indirectly via Blackberry Desktop Manager.

JAD, JAR, COD and ALX installation via OTA (Over the Air)

This is the easiest way to install JAD, JAR, COD and ALX files to your Blackberry. All you have to do is navigate via your Blackberry’s browser to the download page for the application you wish to install and find the direct (OTA) download link. Most application developers will provide direct links to the .jad or .jar files required for internal installation on your BlackBerry.Here is the complete guides on installing applications via OTA:

Using your Blackberry browser (or other mobile browser compatible); go to the application download page
There you will see direct OTA link. Occasionally for some applications, you are required to enter your cellphone number and then the link will be sent to your Blackberry via SMS
Now click on the link provided from your Blackberry browser and follow the instruction.
The app will be unpacked and automatically installed

JAR JAD COD and ALX installation via Blacberry Desktop Manager

This way can also be used to install whether JAR, JAD, COD or ALX file on your Blackberry. It’s not the easiest way but for those who have technical issues with their Blackberry can use this installation guide. It’s pretty simple too. The only requirement is the latest version of the Blackberry Desktop Manager installed on your PC.

Here are the steps on how to install apps (JAR, JAD, COD or ALX) via Blackberry desktop manager:

navigate your browser to the download page of the apps (whether it is on JAR, JAD, COD or ALX format); and download it to your PC
now after that, you may have to unzip/extract the contents to a new folder. Inside your newly created folder you will find a file that ends in .alx
Connect the Blackberry via USB to your Computer
Launch the Blackberry Desktop Manager (BDM)
In the BDM menu there’s an option for “Application Loader”. Click this option,
A screen will appear, displaying list of applications currently loaded on our Blackberry
Search for the “Add” button in the above the list.
An add application dialog box will appear and navigate to your previous .alx. Click OK
The app now appear on the list.
repeat step 7-9 for adding more software to install
verify the new application(s) by giving them a check mark and click the “Next” button (below the list)
Blackberry now will process it and after that it may restart
after restart you will see the apps on the Blackberry’s applications screen

Now those are the most common ways of installing Blackberry application (JAD, JAR, COD, ALX). I will also provide other (alternative) way to do it, but I think it is enough for now. You can now hunt for applications or freeware you like and install them… Lastly, Have a great time with your Blackberry. Blackberry is the best indeed

How to adjust Blackberry optical trackball sensitivity

Yap. Just like many other feature, sometimes the default setting from the factory (RIM) just doesn’t fit our taste; including this new optical trackball’s sensitivity. If you are wondering about how to change or adjust the optical trackball sensitivity setting on your beloved Blackberry, you might find this post usefull

Ok lets start it, shall we?

In order to adjust or change the BB trackball sensitivity, you have to find the sensitivity settings by following these steps:

go to Options
choose Screen/Keyboard
just near the bottom, there are three different sensitivity setting for your trackball; which are horizontal sensitivity, vertical sensitivity, and audible roll.

The numbers can be set between 20 and 100. The higher the sensitivity number, the more responsive the trackball be. But it may also affect the precision.

Since the Blackberry users commonly use vertical scroll more than the horizontal one, I recommend that you set your tracball vertical sensitivity a bit higher compared to the horizontal one. Umm… let say 80.

One more thing, it may be wise to turn the audible roll to mute so that your Blackberry won’t be very noisy when you scroll
